On February 24th, our team at Bissell Thrift Shop is braving the cold to change lives on the Coldest Night of the Year.
This is a family-friendly event that raises awareness for individuals and families struggling in our community – especially in the winter. All the funds raised will support our Bissell Community Space, where individuals can access basic needs like showers, food, washrooms and laundry facilities to life-changing programs.
If you have signed up for Coldest Night of the Year (or you are planning to), here are four things you can do to prepare yourself for event day:
1. Know Your Route
Whether you plan on joining everyone at Boyle Street Plaza or taking your own route, it is always good to know where to go. The two kilometre and five kilometre downtown route maps are available on the Coldest Night of the Year event page. If you are planning on walking on your own (or with your team) in one of our beautiful parks, the City of Edmonton’s website has a list of parks showing what amenities are available. If you are venturing into the river valley, check out this trail map to plan where you will go!
2. Gear Up
When getting ready for the event, make sure you suit up for the elements. This includes a winter jacket, gloves, toque, and layers. Layers will be your best friend. At the end of the day, it is better to be overdressed than underdressed. Being cold and uncomfortable never passes the vibe check.
3. Get in the Zone
There is no better way to get in the zone than by hyping yourself for the event! Go on walks while listening to your favourite tunes to get warmed up for the event day. On the day of, wear the comfiest and warmest clothes that make you feel good so you can start the walk with confidence!
4. Know Your Limits
Don’t forget to focus on your self-care before and after the walk. If this is something you don’t often do, there is no shame in taking your time or opting for the shorter route. Afterward, be sure to do everything you need to do so you can feel fully refreshed and recharged. After all, you cannot fill up others' cups when running on empty.
If you cannot attend this year's event and still want to make an impact:
