Why do you sell donations?

When donations are dropped off at Bissell Thrift Shop, they are sorted, allocated, and distributed to Bissell Centre’s Community Closet, Family Support Services, and other internal programs to ensure our community members have access to free clothing, work gear, household goods, and more.  Donations selected to be sold in our thrift shops are still available to community members through our internal clothing vouchers initiative facilitated by Bissell Centre. We cannot guarantee that all donations will go where you have requested as distribution is based on program need and demand.  

Any items not needed or not suitable for these programs are sold at our two thrift shops and online store. $0.89 of every dollar generated goes back into Bissell Centre’s programs and services, supporting the people in our community who are experiencing houselessness and poverty.  

We are so grateful for these gracious donations; without them Bissell Centre would not be able to offer these services. In 2022 alone, your gracious gifts have funded the following work: 

Do You offer pick-ups?

We offer commercial and business pick-ups – unfortunately, we don’t offer residential pick-up. If you are a business looking to donate, call us at 780-471-6644 or email us at thriftshop@bissellcentre.org to learn more.

Can you hold items for sale at the Thrift Shop?

No, we are unable to place holds on items.

How do I get a tax receipt?

We can provide a tax receipt for new or gently used items. Here is a guide outlining criteria to meet and how tax receipts are issued. 

What we Need to Issue a Tax Receipt for Donated Goods 

1. Documentation of Purchase or Appraisal 

a. Receipt, Invoice, or Package List – You will need to provide a copy of the original receipt, invoice, or package list that details what you paid and must include: 

  • Quantity of items 

  • Description of items 

  • Official business information 

b. Appraisal – If the original receipt or invoice is not available, we will accept information from a third-party appraiser* with documentation that includes name and contact information of the appraiser 

Documents received are reviewed and approved through Donor Support. 

*We cannot recommend an appraiser. 

2. Donor Information 

  • Address – The home or business address of the original donor. 

  • Name – The individual or business name making the donation. 

3. Donation Date: The date when the donation was made. 

After we accept and process the item, you will receive a receipt for the amount appraised. For questions regarding this process, please contact us a 780-471-6644 or thriftshop@bissellcentre.org  

How do I Organize a fundraiser drive?

I donated something by accident, how do i get it back?

We understand this can sometimes happen, please call the store at 780-471-6644 and speak with a supervisor.  They will make note of the item and your contact information. 

We make every effort to locate and return items that were donated by mistake. However, our efficient staff is typically able to accept, process, and place items for sale in our stores in less than 24 hours. If you have donated an item unintentionally, there is a better chance to recover it the sooner you are able to let us know.

HOW can one recieve a clothing voucher?

Clothing vouchers are only available through Bissell Centre’s programs. If you need one or are inquiring on behalf of someone else. Please call the Bissell Centre at 780-423-2285 and they will assist you.
